Call for candidates to the EUNIS Board of Directors 2020

We are actively seeking new candidatures to the EUNIS Board from the regular members of EUNIS as two current board members will not be running for re-election in 2020. If, as a regular member representative, you are interested in putting forward your candidature to act on the Board of Directors of EUNIS, we kindly ask you to send an email by close of business on 21st of May 2020 with a short biography, photo and outlining the motivation of your interest to:
Mr. John Murphy, EUNIS Executive Secretary:
The Board of Directors of EUNIS commits itself to make all efforts to solicit candidatures of excellently qualified female candidates to run for vacant board positions, in line with the policy of an inclusive and diverse organisation.
The EUNIS 2020 General Assembly (GA) will be scheduled during the Virtual EUNIS Congress which will run from the 8th-12th June 2020. Due to the COVID-19 outbreak the Virtual EUNIS Congress will replace the “face to face” Congress originally planned for Helsinki on the same dates.

All official representatives of EUNIS Members are entitled to take part in the GA meeting. This forum is where the decisions related to the EUNIS’ structure and organisation are made and updates from the EUNIS Special Interest Groups and the Board are presented. The General Assembly has two other very important duties: the election of EUNIS members to the EUNIS Board; and approval of the EUNIS budget that will be presented by the Treasurer.

Those representatives of European Higher Education and Research institutions (regular members) that have paid their annual fee and that are in good order in relation to arrears are entitled to take part in the voting and elections to the Board with one vote per institution.

The award celebrates great design where AV is an integral component of enabling education to take place in a given space or campus. Both new build and re-fit are eligible. The award is open to higher education providers worldwide.

In memory of Gregory Palmer

It is with great sadness that we share the news that our dear colleague and friend Gregory (Greg) Palmer passed away on November 12th, 2019, after a long illness. Greg was 69 years old.

He was the representative at EUNIS of the University of Pennsylvania. He attended several EUNIS events, the last one being the EUNIS Congress 2016 in Thessaloniki, where he gave a talk (photo).

Greg was a specialist of communications and networks technology. From 1996 to 1999, he held the role of Director of Campus Computing at Drexel University in Philadelphia. In 1999, he moved to the University of Pennsylvania as the Director of MAGPI, (Metropolitan Area Gigapop in Philadelphia for Internet2), where he created a high- performance network for Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware, dedicated to the research and education communities.

As an example of cooperation, from 2001 to 2005, under the auspices of EUNIS, we carried out an innovative project (the EUMAX project) using the new high-performance networks. This involved students and faculty of the Wharton School (U. of Penn) and a MSc degree in Informatics (University of Grenoble) working together in an immersive multinational environment.

This past summer Greg stepped down from the University of Pennsylvania for health reasons.

We send our heart-felt condolences to his wife Judith, and to his three boys. We will miss him.

on behalf of EUNIS
Jean-François Desnos,
EUNIS Past President
