A new case study: BOMGAR – University of York

University of York: Taking IT Support for a Vibrant University to a New Level

“One thing that set Bomgar apart from another popular solution that the other company wanted to charge extra to support anything other than Mac and Windows. Bomgar’s solution also includes Linux and mobile device support. We have several departments that use Linux technology, so having that capability was an important factor in our decision,” said Sarah Kennedy, IT Support Office Manager.

UCISA celebrates its 21st birthday with EUNIS bursary

Congratulations to our UK sister organisation UCISA which is celebrating its 21st birthday this year.

As part of the celebration UCISA has created a bursary scheme to help its UK members attend international conferences including EUNIS 2014.

UCISA members are increasingly looking beyond the UK for examples of innovation and good practice, whilst at the same time training budgets (especially for international conferences) are under pressure.

In celebration of UCISA’s 21st year, the Executive Committee of UCISA is pleased to announce that a bursary scheme has been created to bring European and US best practice to the UCISA community through funded places at EUNIS (11- 13 June 2014, Umeå University campus, Sweden www.eunis.org/eunis2014/ ) and EDUCAUSE (29 September – 2 October 2014, Orlando, Florida www.educause.edu/annual-conference/2014 )

Please consider applying for a bursary, or nominating staff within your institution.

Information on the selection process and the expected outputs is available on the UCISA website, along with an application form.

Deadline for receipt of applications: Tuesday 20 May

Open Education Europa: a special issue of the eLearning Papers

Experiences and best practices in and around MOOCs by Open Education Europa

eLearning Papers is a digital publication on eLearning by openeducationeuropa.eu, a portal created by the European Commission to promote the use of ICT in education and training.

This special issue of the eLearning Papers is based on the contributions made to the EMOOCS 2014 conference. Its success demonstrates that MOOCs are at the beginning of a wave and a first step towards opening up education.

What are the defining characteristics of a MOOC? Can we categorically differentiate a MOOC from other types of online courses? This is one of the central questions of the debate on the future of MOOCs. An UNED study proposes a quality model based on both course structure and certification process. Most of the debate around the future of MOOCs focuses on learners’ attitudes such as attrition or a lack of satisfaction that leads to disengagement or dropout.
