It is with great sadness that we share the news that our dear colleague and friend Gregory (Greg) Palmer passed away on November 12th, 2019, after a long illness. Greg was 69 years old.

He was the representative at EUNIS of the University of Pennsylvania. He attended several EUNIS events, the last one being the EUNIS Congress 2016 in Thessaloniki, where he gave a talk (photo).

Greg was a specialist of communications and networks technology. From 1996 to 1999, he held the role of Director of Campus Computing at Drexel University in Philadelphia. In 1999, he moved to the University of Pennsylvania as the Director of MAGPI, (Metropolitan Area Gigapop in Philadelphia for Internet2), where he created a high- performance network for Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware, dedicated to the research and education communities.

As an example of cooperation, from 2001 to 2005, under the auspices of EUNIS, we carried out an innovative project (the EUMAX project) using the new high-performance networks. This involved students and faculty of the Wharton School (U. of Penn) and a MSc degree in Informatics (University of Grenoble) working together in an immersive multinational environment.

This past summer Greg stepped down from the University of Pennsylvania for health reasons.

We send our heart-felt condolences to his wife Judith, and to his three boys. We will miss him.

on behalf of EUNIS
Jean-François Desnos,
EUNIS Past President
