    "University information systems in the decision making process"

    Jaak Aaviksoo is the Rector at the University of Tartu since 1998  and the Chairman of the Board of  Estonian Rectors' Conference since 2004. He was Minister of Education of Estonia 1995-1997, before that vice rector of the University of Tartu. He is a physicist, professor of optics and spectroscopy at the University of Tartu. He has been visiting professor and scholar in Russia, Germany, France and Japan. He is a member of Estonian Academy of Sciences, Academic Council of the President of Estonia and the Board of the European University Association.

    "Using the right tools to run a highly complex business - a university"
    Professor Michael Brown is the Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive of Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) and under his leadership, LJMU has, uniquely in UK Higher Education, applied the Excellence Model as its leadership and management framework with great success.
    In a 2004 report commissioned by the British Government, LJMU was uniquely commended for its approach to governance, management and leadership.
    Professor Brown is a Fellow of the Institute of Physics, a Chartered Physicist, a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical Engineers, a Chartered Engineer, a European Engineer (Eur. Ing.), a Fellow of the Institute of Management, a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Marketing, and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. He is a Deputy Lieutenant of the County of Merseyside.

    Among his many interests and activities, he is the Chair of the Strategy and Performance Committee for Merseyside European Funding, Chairman of the Liverpool Science Park, and Chairman of the Liverpool and Merseyside Theatres Trust.

  • Mr Carlo Scatoli, European Commission, Directorate General for Education and Culture, Coordination of Lifelong Learning Programmes
    “The Europass Initiative: better information for successful communication”
    Carlo Scatoli, a European Commission official since 1992, has coordinated the preparation and launch of the Europass initiative and is now responsible for its implementation, which started in 2005.  Within the Commission he has mainly been working on actions and networks to support mobility for learning purposes.  Before joining the Commission he had worked as thesaurus manager and researcher in an Italian information and research centre on education and training."

  • Professor Thierry Dombre, Chairman of Grenoble Universities Information Systems Steering Committee, France
    "Sharing tools and practices to face the challenges of the Bologna process: strategic cooperation between Grenoble universities"
    Thierry Dombre is Professor of Physics at Université Joseph Fourier. As the elected Vice-President for Studies (1999-2003), he has been the leader of the Bologna process implementation at Joseph Fourier. He is now serving since 2004 as the Chairman of the Information Systems Steering Committee for the four universities of Grenoble.
    Thierry Dombre studied at Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris and holds a Ph. D. in Theoretical Physics from Université Pierre et Marie Curie. In the 1990's, he has been twice an invited scientist at Cornell University in the USA.

  • Professor Marek Kreglewski, Vice Rector Poznan University, Poland
    “The influence of the Bologna ideas on the development of IT in Polish universities”

    Marek Kreglewski is professor of physical and theoretical chemistry at the Adam Mickiewicz University since 1991. In the years 1993 to 1999 and again since 2005 he has served as vice-rector for student affairs (1993-1996) and for research and international relations. He is also a Secretary General of the Conference of Polish University Rectors for the second term. During last 8 years he has coordinated programs on Information Technologies of 16 Polish universities as Director of the Interuniversity Centre for IT


  • Mr Les Watson, Pro Vice Chancellor Glasgow Caledonian University, UK
    “Can Information Technology Transform our Institutions?”
    Les Watson is Pro Vice-Chancellor at Glasgow Caledonian University. He is a member of the University Executive and is responsible for all academically related services such as Library, Information and Communications Technology, and Student Services. He has been at Glasgow Caledonian since 1999 and previously worked as a Dean at the University of Gloucestershire. He has worked in education for 34 years as a teacher of Biological Science, lecturer and researcher in computers in education, and as a senior manager. His interests include the application of technology to learning, learning environment development, and creative management. He is a member of the Chartered institute of management, fellow of the RSA, and regular contributor to the Times Educational Supplement.

  • Professor Jose M. Santos, Vice Rector University of Porto, Portugal
    "Information Technology, a strategic tool to build the European Higher Education Area".
    Prof. José C. Marques dos Santos has been appointed Vice-Rector of the University of Porto and President of the Institute for Common Initiatives and Resources of the same University. He has a “Licenciatura” in Electrical Engineering from University of Porto (Portugal), a M.Sc. in Digital Electronics and a PhD from the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UK). He is a member of the teaching staff of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP) since 1971. In 1988 he was appointed full professor of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computers of FEUP. In October 1990 he was appointed Dean of FEUP. He has been Dean of FEUP for more than eleven Years. Before 1990, he has also been President of Department, Leader of Research Units and coordinator of several research projects, some of them under the European FP programmes. He has supervised several PhD and M.Sc. students.

  • Dr Mike Zastrocky, Managing VP Higher Education, Gartner Group, USA
    "Managing Strategic Issues: Should IT Be Considered?"
    Dr. Zastrocky has more than 30 years of diverse experience in higher education. Before joining Gartner, he was a faculty member at several universities, assistant dean, chief information officer, and served as vice president of CAUSE, the international association for managing and using information resources in higher education from 1989-1995 (now EDUCAUSE). He has served as a consultant for a number of colleges and universities and was a vice president of the Kaludis Consulting Group. He has delivered many keynote addresses around the globe and has served as a faculty member for numerous institutes and seminars. He has been widely published on a variety of technology planning and management topics. He has served as a university trustee and a board member for both non-profit and for-profit higher education organizations.
