EUNIS2005 in Manchester

For its 11th International Conference EUNIS returned to the University of Manchester, UK from 21 to 24 June 2005. Manchester had hosted the second EUNIS conference in 1996. This year the Conference theme was “Leadership and Strategy in a Cyber-Infrastructure World”.

Approximately 200 delegates from 27 countries attended the event. Keynote speakers were Professor Alan Gilbert (President and Vice Chancellor at Manchester), Michael Zastrocky (Gartner), Jonathan Murray (Microsoft) and Richard Katz (Educause). In addition there were more than 70 presentations from members of the EUNIS community and several company tracks. This year there wasn’t a large-scale exhibition, but most of our Corporate Members were at the Conference and gave financial support to different aspects of it, including seminars, drinks receptions and the Gala Dinner. We thank Blackboard, Gartner, Microsoft, Polopoly, SAP, Sun Microsystems, SunGardSCT and WebCT for their generous sponsorship.

The cultural highlight of the Conference was the Lord Mayor of Manchester’s Reception at the majestic Town Hall. See the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress with members of the EUNIS Board of Directors above.

We sincerely thank Mark Clark, Paula Roach and all their colleagues at Manchester who worked so hard to make EUNIS2005 a successful conference.

The Proceedings were distributed to delegates on CD when they registered for the Conference. Individual papers may be accessed from the Final Programme page at http://www.mc.manchester.ac.uk/eunis2005/conferenceprogramme/finalprogramme/

Farewell to two Past Presidents

This year two past Presidents of EUNIS have stepped down from their elected positions on the Board of Directors - Yves Epelboin and Kristel Sarlin. Both Yves and Kristel have been deeply involved in the activities of EUNIS since the beginning. They participated in the meeting in Paris in October 1993 when EUNIS was established. Since then they have both made an immense contribution to the success of the association and they will be greatly missed – though I am pleased to report that Yves will continue to play a significant part in EUNIS activities, including hosting our web site and mail lists. He is also planning to write a history of EUNIS! We wish Kristel a long and happy retirement.

EUNIS Top Concerns

This year, for the first time, EUNIS has conducted an online Top Concerns Survey to discover which issues are of great concern to our members. The survey was very similar to one carried out by UCISA in the UK in 2004 and 2005, which in turn was modelled on the EDUCAUSE Current Issues Survey. The exercise was carried out by Iain Stinson and colleagues from the University of Liverpool, UK. We are very grateful to them for the effort they put into this project.

Iain Stinson presented the findings of the survey at EUNIS2005. User Management and Network Security ranked as the highest concerns of the voters. The results will be available on the EUNIS website shortly.

To encourage colleagues to take part in the survey a prize draw of all participants took place. The winner was Sven Kirsimäe of the University of Tartu, who will receive his iPod shortly.
